A supermoon, the first of four this year, was seen above the ancient temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounio, south of Athens on Monday.
The full moon approaches Earth a bit closer than usual during a supermoon. When a full lunar phase coincides with an exceptionally close swing around Earth, a supermoon occurs. This often only occurs three or four times a year and consecutively, given the moon’s constantly shifting, oval-shaped orbit.
