SAN ANTONIO—Art lovers Gloria Sánchez Hart and John Hart saw much to commend in Shen Yun Performing Arts, from the performers themselves to the multilayered storytelling, innovative stagecraft, and the overall thought-provoking art.

The couples saw the performance on Dec. 31 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio. Mrs. Hart is a printmaking artist with an international 50-year career and thought about what must be driving the artists as she enjoyed the beauty she saw on stage. Mr. Hart is a retired mathematics professor and investor.

“I am now retired,” he said, “looking for—”

“Enlightenment,” Mrs. Hart finished for her husband.

“Enlightenment, like in this show,” he said.

“That music and dance are international languages. There are no boundaries; our emotions can feel the message and they can help us to try to reach wisdom and enlightenment, but it takes time,” Mr. Hart said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

It is not uncommon for audience members to say they found the performance spiritual or profound, perhaps because the traditional Chinese culture that Shen Yun presents is a divinely inspired one.

Mrs. Hart said Shen Yun was a many-layered work of art, from the levels of historical information imparted to the beauty of the production to the music and every other aspect.

“It’s just so complete and so rich,” she said. “It’s very beautiful.”

“It’s art and beauty,” she said. “And, you know, I was thinking—the choice, the career that these performers have because of the difficulty of the technique of dancing, you know, perfection.”

“It’s the perfection. You need to be young and flexible, and it’s just a bunch of talented people here together doing [an] amazing job. I appreciate that, the determination to be here and do it.”
