Houston Audience Enjoys Shen Yun’s ‘Courage and Conviction’

January 2, 2025

Shen Yun Performing Arts took the stage for six performances in Houston and Austin on Dec. 28 and 29. The artists received a certificate from a Texas state senator commending their mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.

Jan Sadler, a piano teacher, said Shen Yun was “absolutely beautiful, there was just nothing that I didn’t think was awesome because [of] the coordination of the dances, the outfits, the multimedia with the screens, and the orchestra. Everything was just so perfectly timed.”

Carol van Waarde, a realtor and business owner, said she “loved the excellence of the dancing. I loved that there were stories to be told. I really enjoyed the ethnic dancing, regional dancing. It was great.”

“It’s very important to preserve and to show traditional culture everywhere, especially Chinese culture. Because Chinese culture has so many other cultures as part of it,” said Larry Cohen, a chief software developer.

Brad Dunn, a business owner said that he “thought it was very beautiful. The colors were amazing. The stories were beautiful. The messaging was nice.”

Charles Armbrust, a lawyer, said that he “liked the artistry a lot, and I liked the courage and the conviction of the show. I feel it is rare to see modern art that takes strong political and religious stances, and I like that the show was brave about doing that, especially against the communists.”

Traditional Chinese culture finds its roots in spirituality and the divine. Shen Yun showcases those themes through classical Chinese dance, music, and legends.

Jan Sadler said “it was definitely a spiritual presentation … believing that there is more than this world and that we have a relationship and that we will reap what we sow here, absolutely I believe that.”

Nick Kirby, a senior account executive, said he felt “hopeful when it was talking about the creator is coming. I definitely can understand the storyline, and I feel hopeful about it for sure.”

Shen Yun will be performing at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio, Texas, on Dec. 30 and 31.
