As Americans across the country ring in the New Year this week, it’s mostly business as usual for major national retailers. But while many businesses and offices continue to provide services, some may be operating under adjusted hours.

New Year’s Eve is not designated a federal holiday by the U.S. government, so federal offices will remain open that day. However, New Year’s Day is a federally observed holiday.

This year, New Year’s Eve falls on a Tuesday, placing New Year’s Day mid-week.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed on both days.

Banks, Post Offices, Delivery Services

Banks and post offices will largely remain open on New Year’s Eve since it falls on a Tuesday this year and is not a federal holiday. However, there will be widespread closures for federal facilities on New Year’s Day. Mobile banking services and ATMs will remain available as usual.

According to its website, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1, and there will be no regular mail services that day. Normal retail, delivery, and collection schedules will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2.

FedEx offers modified services on New Year’s Eve, according to its online holiday schedule, but will be closed on New Year’s Day.

United Parcel Service (UPS) will also shut down its services on New Year’s Day, while pickup and delivery services will not be available and most of its locations will be closed, its online schedule states. Only UPS Air and International Air services will deliver on New Year’s Eve.

Retail

As the calendar flips to 2025, there will likely be errands to run including last-minute trips to the store, stocking up on groceries, or preparing for a New Year’s celebration.

Walmart stores will be open as usual for regular business hours on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, although some stores may have modified hours. A local manager advised NTD to call specific locations to confirm their holiday schedule.

Target will also be open for both days. Although some locations may close early on New Year’s Eve, most of its stores are set to close at 9 p.m.

It will also be business as usual for most Kroger stores on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Albertsons will operate under reduced hours on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Costco stores will be open until 6 p.m. local time on New Year’s Eve, but will be closed on New Year’s Day, according to an online holiday schedule.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies nationwide will remain open to provide important services to customers in need of necessary prescriptions. However, some stores may keep their retail section open while closing their pharmacies for the new year. Customers should check specific locations for modified schedules or talk to a local associate to avoid any disruptions to their refills or access to medication.

Rite Aid pharmacies will continue to provide services to customers on New Year’s Eve but are set to close on New Year’s Day.

Most Walgreens will operate for limited hours on New Year’s Eve and close on New Year’s Day.

CVS Pharmacies will remain open on both days, though some locations may operate according to modified hours.

New York Stock Exchange

The stock market is open for regular trading hours on New Year’s Eve from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time. Operations will shut down on Wednesday in observance of New Year’s Day.

The bond market is set to close early on New Year’s Eve at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
