Italy’s Mount Etna—Europe’s tallest and most active volcano—roared into action on Nov. 12, spewing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island of Sicily.

Video footage shows lava bombs being ejected from the crater and massive plumes of ash and steam rising into the sky.

The nearby Catania airport remains open for the time being despite the volcano’s activity and the resulting ash precipitation, Italy’s ANSA news agency said.
