Church Brothers Farms has voluntarily recalled green onions sold to a limited number of U.S. and Canadian retailers due to potential salmonella contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration reports that Church Brothers Farms recalled 1,271 cases of green onions. The recall was prompted after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency collected a sample that tested positive for salmonella.

As of Oct. 18, Church Brothers has not reported any illnesses related to the consumption of the green onions, according to the FDA.

  • Trader Joe’s

All recalled products were sold in retail bags with the product code CB272378 displayed on the front.

The recall affects the following states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia, as well as in Canada nationwide. According to the FDA, distribution was limited to a small number of retail and food service customers.

What Should Consumers Do?

If you have purchased the recalled green onions, discard them immediately, and do not consume the product. It is best to wash your hands with soap after disposing of any affected product, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Chives or scallions can be substituted as a garnish in place of green onions.

If consumers have any questions, they can also contact the Church Brothers Farms consumer hotline at 1-877-590-0428, which is available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST.

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract and can pose serious health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations. In children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, it can lead to severe or even fatal complications.

Other recent recalls include waffle and pancake products from TreeHouse Foods due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. According to the FDA, there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to these products so far.

The recalled items were distributed nationwide across the U.S. and Canada and were sold in various retail stores, including (but not limited to) Albertson’s, Aldi, Dollar General, Foodhold, HEB, Kroger, Publix, Target, and Walmart. A complete list of affected products is available on the FDA website.
