Tortilla Strips Recalled in 22 States Due to Undeclared Wheat Allergen

Sugar Foods has initiated a recall of its Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style due to the presence of undeclared wheat in the product.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), The recall affects products packaged in 3.5-ounce pouches with the UPC Code 7 87359 17504 6 and a best-by date of June 20, 2025.

The issue arose when a consumer reported finding Crispy Onions instead of Tortilla Strips in the pouch. The Crispy Onions product contains wheat, which is not listed on the Tortilla Strips’ label, posing a risk to individuals with wheat allergies or sensitivities.

No illnesses have been reported to date, however.

The affected products were shipped between Sept. 30 and Nov. 11 to distribution centers in multiple states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or to discard them.

For further information, consumers can contact Sugar Foods’ Consumer Care Department at [email protected] or call 332-240-6676, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

Recent Recalls

Food recalls have recently impacted major brands like Boar’s Head and McDonald’s, but experts caution against immediate alarm.

While many recalls fly under the radar, recent high-profile incidents involving organic carrots, slivered onions, and liverwurst have sparked renewed concern over U.S. food safety. However, data from the FDA reveals that there has not been a significant increase in recalls, most of which are voluntarily initiated by companies.

How to Protect Yourself From Foodborne Illness

Reducing the risk of foodborne illness starts with proactive steps at home. Here’s how to keep yourself and your family safe:

  • Stay Informed:
Keep up-to-date with food recall announcements and regularly check your pantry and refrigerator for potentially affected products.
  • Practice Good Hygiene:
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling food.
  • Clean Fresh Produce:
Rinse fruits and vegetables under running water, even if the packaging claims they’re triple-washed. Remove areas where bacteria may thrive, such as crevices in carrots or wilted lettuce leaves.
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination:
Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meats and other foods. For instance, don’t chop fruits or vegetables with the same knife or on a cutting board used for raw meat.
  • Handle Leftovers Safely:
Refrigerate leftovers promptly and avoid leaving food out at room temperature for extended periods.
