Shen Yun Performing Arts began its 2025 world tour in Nagoya, Japan, showcasing an all-new program with new music, choreography, and backdrops. Some of the audience members described how they felt after seeing Shen Yun for the very first time.
“It was wonderful! It was my first time seeing [Shen Yun], and when the curtain went up, it was so colorful,” said Tokuhisa Tamura, chair of the board of directors at a nonprofit organization.
“It was my first time to see Shen Yun and I was very surprised,” said Toshiro Sugimoto, director of Shoshu Shoshi Office. “The men’s Tibetan dance was great, they must have trained very hard.”
Masayuki Kato, president of a construction company, said, “Every program was so good, and the male performers danced so vigorously that it was just wonderful.”
Shen Yun blends technology with traditional Chinese choreography by integrating the company’s patented digital backdrop into the performance, immersing audience members into the stories.
Yako Kato, a company director at her husband’s construction company, said: “The most amazing thing is that the backdrop, orchestra, and dance are all one and the same, with no difference and no time delay whatsoever. I was so moved by the way [the performers] jumped in and out of the canopy that I felt like I was in it.”
Kiyoyuki Suzuki, a company director, commented that “the combination of the backdrop and the dance was wonderful. The actors are very neat and tidy, and I’m very interested in how their bodies can be trained like that.”
Drawing inspiration from China’s 5,000 years of rich cultural heritage, each performance holds a theme of spirituality, a value that is found at the origins of traditional Chinese culture.
Mr. Tamura said, “The message I got from the show is that the human world and the heavenly world are connected, and that human beings are connected to both Gods and Buddhas.”
Ms. Kato said, “When you are in danger, it is a great joy to have the hope of being saved at the end of the day.”
Shen Yun will be at the Nagoya Aichi Prefectural Art Theater until Dec. 27, and will continue to perform in Japan on Dec. 30 in Kyoto.
