‘Elegant’ and ‘Peaceful’: Latvian Audiences Marvel at Shen Yun’s Performance

January 8, 2025

Shen Yun Performing Arts graced the stage in Riga, Latvia, on Jan 5 and 6. Audience members marveled at the company’s artistry, some were even brought to tears.

“It’s expressed in a very elegant and peaceful way. I had tears in my eyes, but I was peaceful. That’s something very interesting to experience,” said Sarmite Moncaka, a theatre director and choreographer.

“What I really liked is how artists can tell the whole story just by showing their faces and movements. You don’t need words,” said Elita Moiseja, a business owner and chairwoman. “You can tell the whole story just by your body and your facial expression.”

“Very good, I really liked the performance of the orchestra. It’s very synchronous with the movements and the music. It all gives great enjoyment,” said Andris Pimenovs, a university union chairman.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese civilization and values from before communism, and showcase them through classical Chinese dance and music. Audience members took note of a deeper message.

“It is that you have to believe, even when you are doing things here, that it is difficult. In the end there will be the good and the result. You have to believe in it. It won’t be right away in the short term, but in the long term that’s the goal and the good will always win. That is the main message I got from this program,” said Māris Brizgo, a lawyer.

“This story is about goodness and believing in goodness. Because it’s clean, it gives tears in the eyes,” said Moncaka.

“I would definitely recommend coming to see it. It’s a wonderful experience,” said Brizgo. “We are definitely less exposed to Chinese culture in our daily lives so it definitely broadens our horizons and information about Chinese culture I would definitely recommend it to others. Very good!”

“They are so wonderful. They are so professional. We would love to see them again in Riga,” said Moiseja.

Shen Yun will be performing in London in the United Kingdom from Jan. 7 through 12.
