Dynarex Corporation has expanded the recall of its baby powder over potential asbestos contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted on Oct. 28.
The initial recall was issued on Sept. 19, when the medical supply company recalled 62 cases of its Dynacare Baby Powder (14 oz.) with item No. 4875 and Batch Number B 051.

What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that is a carcinogen. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), exposure to asbestos causes mesotheliomas, a relatively rare cancer of the thin tissue that lines the chest and abdomen. Asbestos can also cause cancer in the lungs, larynx, and ovaries.
The FDA performed a routine sampling program that found the final product contained asbestos, the company said. The agency investigated the case further and “identified additional lots of products that may contain asbestos due to using the same bulk talc material.”
According to the FDA recall alert, the naturally occurring mineral asbestos is often found near talc deposits, and talc is an ingredient used in many cosmetic products.
“If talc mining sites are not carefully chosen or if proper steps are not taken to adequately purify the talc ore, it may contain asbestos,” the FDA alert said.
Dynarex Corporation has stopped distribution of the product as the investigation continues in order to determine what caused the contamination of the talc.
