Producer Grimmway Farms is recalling organic carrots over potential E. Coli contamination.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health officials in several states are investigating the large outbreak of E. coli linked to organic carrots, which has to date affected 39 people across 18 states, resulting in 15 hospitalizations and at least one death, according to a Sunday statement from the CDC.
The reported E. coli cases are associated with bagged organic whole and baby carrots that originated at Grimmway Farms, which is based in Bakersfield, California. The company issued a recall on Saturday for the carrots, which are sold under multiple brand names including 365, Cal-Organic, Nature’s Promise, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and more.
The recall includes organic baby carrots with best-if-used-by dates ranging from Sept. 11 to Nov. 12, and whole organic carrots sold in stores from around Aug. 14 to Oct. 23, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Grimmway Farms said that the affected products are not likely to be in grocery stores anymore, but may be in customers’ homes.
The CDC advised consumers to check their refrigerators or freezers and to throw away the affected carrots. Consumers should wash items and surfaces that may have touched the affected product using hot soapy water or place them in a dishwasher, the agency said.
Grimmway Farms says its food safety team is now working with suppliers and health authorities to respond to the outbreak.
“We take our role in ensuring the safety and quality of our products seriously,” said Jeff Huckaby, Grimmway Farms President and CEO, in a statement. “The health of our customers and the integrity of our products are our highest priorities, and we are conducting a thorough review of our growing, harvest, and processing practices.”
