Owner of The Washington Post, Jeff Bezos, is defending his decision not to endorse a presidential candidate. Bezos wrote in an Oct. 28 editorial that the American public’s distrust of media is fueled by perceptions of bias and that “what presidential endorsements actually do is create” such perceptions. He said that ending endorsements is a “principled decision, and it’s the right one.” The Los Angeles Times and USA Today have also announced they will not endorse a presidential candidate.
Authorities are investigating an incident where two ballot drop boxes were set on fire early Monday morning in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington. Portland Police reported that an incendiary device was placed in a ballot box, damaging three ballots. And in Vancouver, police say the ballot box there caught fire from a suspicious device placed next to it, destroying hundreds of ballots.
With just over a week until election day, Virginia is pushing to have about 1,600 suspected non-citizens removed from its voter rolls. The state has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the action to go ahead. Officials filed an emergency application Monday. In a separate case, the Republican National Committee is asking the Supreme Court to halt Pennsylvania’s ruling on provisional ballots. The ruling allows voters to cast a provisional ballot if they submitted their mail-in ballots improperly.
