Iranian state media says Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is dead. Haniyeh was reportedly killed in Tehran. Hamas in a statement said Haniyeh was killed along with his bodyguard during a raid on his home. The terrorist group says it happened after Haniyeh participated in the Iranian president’s inauguration. It’s not clear when he was killed. Iran’s state media cited the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as its source. It says an investigation is underway, and that the results will be announced later today. Iran’s supreme leader is now vowing revenge against Israel.
Meanwhile, fears of all-out war between Israel and the terrorist group Hezbollah are rising, after an Israeli air-strike in Beirut. Israel says it targeted a Hezbollah commander and killed him last night. The military says he was responsible for the weekend terror attack in the Golan Heights. Twelve children and teens were killed by a rocket, while playing on a soccer field on July 27. More than 40 people were wounded in the attack. Lebanon’s foreign minister said earlier this week, that an Israeli attack in Beirut’s southern suburbs would surely lead to war. A White House National Security Council spokesperson reaffirmed the United States commitment to Israel’s security as ‘ironclad’ after the strike.
