The death toll from the California wildfires has risen to at least 24, with more than a dozen still missing. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, and more than 100,000 residents have been forced to evacuate. Firefighters continue to battle two major fires with high winds expected to return, making containment harder. Looters have targeted evacuation zones, while the California National Guard has been deployed to help protect homes and businesses.

The Senate is set to begin confirming President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees. The first confirmation hearings will commence on Tuesday, when relevant Senate committees will review Trump’s choices for defense secretary and secretary of the interior, among others. NTD spoke with political analyst Jeff Crouere to discuss what issues could arise during the Senate confirmations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Joe Biden spoke on Sunday about a potential cease-fire deal as efforts intensify before Trump’s inauguration. Biden also spoke with the families of three Americans detained in Afghanistan since 2022 as the United States continues negotiations for their release.
