NTD Good Morning Full Broadcast (Aug. 19)

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicks off on Monday. It’s the first day of a four-day event during which Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept the party’s nomination. Harris has already officially won the Democratic presidential nomination in an online vote, the first time a nominee was named before a party convention. However, party leaders will still hold a ceremonial vote at the convention to celebrate the occasion. NTD takes a look at what’s been happening on the ground in Chicago, and how the city has been getting ready for the tens of thousands of people expected to attend the DNC.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Israel to meet with top officials. He’s hoping to close a hostage and cease-fire deal this week to end the Israel–Hamas War. Diplomats are also hoping a deal can avert an expected strike from Iran and its terror proxies. Mediators will meet in Egypt on Tuesday to push a proposal the Biden administration hopes will bridge any remaining gaps. In Tel Aviv, meanwhile, police are investigating an explosion that killed one person and injured another on Aug. 18.

Ukraine says it’s continuing to make gains in Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the goal of the incursion is to create a buffer zone and to disrupt Russian army supply lines. Meanwhile, Belarus has said there’s been a build-up of Ukrainian troops along its border. And the United Nations nuclear watchdog has warned that safety levels at a Ukrainian power plant controlled by Russia are deteriorating rapidly.
