New French Prime Minister Faces Divided Parliament, Protests

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Michel Barnier, a former EU Brexit negotiator, as the country’s new Prime Minister amid political deadlock following June’s snap election. Barnier, a member of a small nationalist group in parliament, faces immediate challenges, including managing public finances and the 2025 budget. He must also cope with a divided parliament and widespread protests.
