National Police Association: Heading on ‘Very Dangerous, Destructive Path’

While the nation watches the murder trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin over the in-custody death of George Floyd, 10 miles from the Minnesota courtroom, an officer shot and killed another black man during a traffic stop, 20-year-old Daunte Wright. From the police bodycam footage, it seems now ex-officer Kim Potter accidentally discharged her gun instead of her taser. Black Lives Matter and Antifa demonstrators poured into the streets. Cities across the country have seen nights of arson, looting, and violent clashes with police.

Sgt. Betsy Smith, spokesperson for the National Police Association, gives the law enforcement perspective on these developments.

Sgt. Smith also talks about the recent Department of Justice decision not to charge the Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt on January 6, after she and others breached the Capitol Building. Sgt. Smith calls the decision a double-standard and the result of politicizing law enforcement.
