Fei Tian Academy of the Arts’ Stanley Lin won the Gold Award in the Adult Male Division in the 9th NTD International Classical Chinese Dance Competition, which took place Sept. 2–5 in New York state.
“Well I’m surprised—I’ve participated in this competition three times now, and I had no expectations to win the Gold Award,” Lin said.
The classical Chinese dance competition is one in a series of international cultural and arts events aimed at promoting traditional culture. In China, this culture has been all but destroyed by the Chinese Communist Party over the past several decades. The events are hosted by NTD.
Lin said just in the process of participating in the competition, he felt he improved not only his dance, but also his character.
“I’m introverted by nature, so sometimes there are movements that I don’t do as well when I get self conscious,” he explained. “But through this process, I kept thinking about how as a dancer, as a performing artist, what you do is try to give your best to the audience. You can’t focus your view only on yourself.”
“I definitely have a lot more room for improvement,” he said. “I look forward to doing my best.”
“My wish is to show people the true classical Chinese dance, and show them what is wonderful about classical Chinese dance,” he said.
