Emmy Award-winning journalist Chauncy Glover, a prominent anchor for KCAL News, has died unexpectedly at the age of 39, according to a statement from the CBS News affiliate KCAL News.
Glover, who joined KCAL News in October 2023, had quickly become a familiar face to Los Angeles viewers, co-anchoring the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Pat Harvey and the 8 and 10 p.m. broadcasts with Suzie Suh.
Before moving to California, Glover made history in Houston as the first Black male main evening anchor at KTRK, where he spent eight years.
Glover’s parents, Sherry and Robert Glover, said they are shaken by the recent news.
“We, along with Chauncy’s beloved family, are devastated by the unimaginable loss of our beloved Chauncy. He was more than a son and brother—he was a beacon of light in our lives and a true hero to his community,” his family told the news outlet.
Glover’s impact extended beyond the newsroom. According to KCAL News, he founded “The Chauncy Glover Project,” a mentorship program that has guided over 350 young men of color to college and mentored more than 1,000 in total. The program, which Glover started in Detroit and relocated to Houston, focuses on various aspects of personal development, including etiquette, college readiness, and public speaking.
“Chauncy’s compassion and dedication to helping others, especially through the Chauncy Glover Project, changed countless lives and inspired so many young men to pursue their dreams,” his family stated.
Glover’s journalism career began at WTVM News in Columbus, Georgia, but his passion for broadcasting was apparent from a young age. KCAL News reported that at just 5 years old, Glover would perform newscasts for his family from a miniature anchor desk built by his father.
Throughout his career, Glover worked in several states, including Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and Texas, before his final move to California. His talents extended beyond journalism; he was also involved in theater and once honored civil rights icon Rosa Parks by singing at her funeral in Montgomery, Alabama.
Fellow journalist Erica Simon, an anchor at ABC13, said in a lengthy Facebook post Glover was one of her best friends and the news is deeply troubling for her.
“I’m devastated, heartbroken and can’t think straight … Anyone who knows me knows how much CG means to me … and that he’s one of the best friends I’ve ever had,” she wrote.
Her post highlighted Glover’s generosity, perfectionism, and deep faith.
“CG loved the Lord with all his heart and now, can rest in the peace and presence of the Father,” she wrote.
Glover’s family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.
“While we grieve this profound loss, we are comforted by the outpouring of love and memories shared by those who knew Chauncy as the passionate, gifted soul he was. We kindly ask for privacy as we mourn and honor his incredible legacy,” they said.
Glover’s cause of death was not revealed.
