5 Dead, 1 Wounded in Murder-Suicide in Ponder, Texas

A man entered a home in Ponder, Texas, on the morning of May 16 and opened fire on the occupants, killing four and wounding one.

He then turned the gun on himself, NBC reported.

Sometime before 8:30 a.m., the shooter, yet to be named, entered a home in the 600 block of Lone Star Park Lane in Ponder – a town of 1,400 people, 35 miles north of Fort Worth.

The initial call was about a burglary, Capt. Orlando Hinojosa with the Denton County Sheriff’s Office told the Star-Telegram.

Around the same time at 8:28 a.m., the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department got a call about someone with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters responded to the calls. When they arrived, they found five bodies and one adult woman who was still alive but suffering from one or more gunshot wounds, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported.

She was was taken to Medical City Denton. There is no word of her condition as yet.

Police are treating the incident as a murder-suicide, and are not looking for other suspects.

“The shooter was a male,” Hinojosa said. “He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Police are investigating a red Ford Focus with South Carolina license plates which was parked at the scene.

There were children among the shooting victims. A neighbor, Mary Jean Dennis, said she saw a man walking with the children towards the house just eight minutes before the shooting, the Chronicle reported.

The shooter is believed to be the survivor’s ex-husband. The victims were the woman’s current boyfriend and three children, the Denton County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The Ponder Police Department is cooperating with the Denton County Sheriff’s Department to investigate the incident.
