More than 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate communities impacted by the wildfires in Southern California.
At least five people have been killed, while many others have been injured, including firefighters.
As Americans across the country look for ways to help those in need, potential donors are being warned of fraudulent sites that tend to emerge during times of natural disaster. Donors should only consider legitimate organizations and should donate directly to established charities.
Here are three different ways to help those impacted by the wildfires and first responders risking their own lives to save others and protect communities.
American Red Cross
Local Red Cross disaster teams are supporting several shelter locations and those who have been forced to evacuate due to the wildfires, according to the organization.
“With tens of thousands of people forced from their homes, the Red Cross is working alongside our partners to provide safe shelter, food, emotional support and health services,” the American Red Cross said in a statement.
“Over the coming days, the Red Cross will coordinate with local officials and community partners to make sure people have the support they need during this challenging time.”
As a nonprofit humanitarian organization, the Red Cross depends on public support. Visit its website, call 1-800-RED CROSS, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help people affected by disasters, including the devastating California wildfires.
Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation
An emergency funding alert posted on the official website of the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation shows that the nonprofit organization is actively seeking funds to equip its members with the supplies necessary to fight wildfires. This includes hydration backpacks and wildland brush tools.
According to the foundation, “only about three percent of its budget is expected to cover repair and replacement costs for everything from flashlights to fire engines.”
Visit its website to help donate vital equipment and help fund critical programs to support firefighters’ efforts in saving lives and protecting communities.
Salvation Army
“Wildfire survivors need immediate help,” an alert posted by the Salvation Army’s Southern California Division website reads.
Donations to the organization provide crucial aid, shelter, food, and support for wildfire survivors, with the money going directly to support evacuees and first responders.
Its wildfire efforts support both short and long-term needs.
“Rebuilding the community, residences, and homes will take years and The Salvation Army continues to provide financial assistance and support to all communities, as funding is available, until their needs are met,” its website reads.
At the request of Homeland Security, the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services recently helped serve warm meals to first responders in New Orleans, the site of the deadly New Year’s terror attack.
