A three-member panda family made its way back to China Wednesday. The two parents ventured across the Pacific Ocean to the United States 23 years ago, calling the Smithsonian National Zoo home ever since.
Many see China’s tight restrictions on pandas as a soft diplomatic strategy. China doesn’t grant foreign zoos full custody, instead lending the bears out for set amounts of time and reserving the right to recall them at the end of those contracts.
