Volvo Trucks has recalled certain trucks over a defect with the vehicles’ electronic control units, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revealed in a notification.

The company issued a report to the NHTSA on Oct. 23, stating that the recall impacts 126,649 owners of certain 2020 to 2025 VN, VAH, VHD, and VNRE trucks fitted with Bendix EC-80 Advanced Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and equipped to tow a trailer.

An NHTSA letter outlined that in affected vehicles, electrical noise and low signal strength to the Power Line Carrier (PLC) may cause the ECU to incorrectly process commands or stop working.

Safety systems that rely on the ECU—the Automatic Traction Control, ABS, Electronic Stability Control, Active Cruise Control, and Collison Mitigation Systems—may exhibit diminished functionality or lose functionality altogether, increasing the risk of a crash.

The safety recall report notes that vehicles without the capacity to tow trailers and that are not fitted with Bendix EC-80 and PLC communication systems are excluded from the recall.

No field reports, accidents, or injuries have been reported due to the ECU issue, the NHTSA stated.

Volvo Trucks will send notification letters to owners affected by the recall by Dec. 13 while dealers will be informed by Oct. 29, according to the report.

Dealers will update the ECU software free of charge and compensation for the recall will be covered by the Manufacturer’s Reimbursement Plan on file with the NHTSA, the recall report stated.

Chrysler Recall

On Oct. 24, Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) filed a report with the NHTSA to recall certain 2025 Ram 1500 vehicles, affecting some 33,777 owners.

The affected vehicles may have been built with damaged front wheel hub encoder rings causing a loss of wheel speed signal, possibly leading to the electronic stability control system being disabled, according to the recall report.

Driving with a disabled electronic stability control system when intervention is expected or relied upon by drivers can increase the risk of a crash, the report states.

Due to the damaged front wheel hub encoder rings, the vehicle does not meet the safety requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 126.

According to an impact analysis from the NHTSA, the functional requirements of Standard 126 state the ESC system “must be operational during all phases of driving including acceleration, coasting, and deceleration (including braking), except when the driver has disabled ESC, the vehicle speed is below 15 km/h (9.3 mph), or the vehicle is being driven in reverse.”

Owners affected by the recall will be notified by letter on or around Dec. 19, with the report stating that dealers will inspect each vehicle and replace the front wheel bearing hub assembly, if necessary.
