A man who tried to shoot a Pennsylvania pastor during a Sunday church service in North Braddock, Pennsylvania—ostensibly because “God told him to do it”—was thwarted when his gun didn’t fire.

The would-be assassin, Bernard J. Polite, of Braddock, entered the church just after 1 p.m., and soon walked toward the front while the Rev. Glenn Germany was giving a sermon. According to Pennsylvania State Troopers, Mr. Polite was tackled by a congregant after his attempt.

Mr. Germany and the congregant then wrestled the gun away from Mr. Polite, who was soon subdued and held until state troopers arrived. Mr. Polite faces numerous charges, including aggravated assault and attempted homicide, and was being held without bail Monday at the Allegheny County Jail.
