The United Nations in New York has partnered with Beijing to set up joint data hubs, which will reportedly be based in China.
According to Hudson Institute researcher Claudia Rosett, plans include a research center for crunching data from U.N. member states and a geospatial center to further practice China’s power on satellite surveillance.
The U.N.’s website explains that geospatial information details the “when(s), where(s), and why(s)” of our world—and includes all social, economic, and environmental activity.
