FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Amid the graceful movements of the dancers and the soulful music from the live orchestra, attorney Mark Glaser sat captivated during Shen Yun Performing Arts’ evening show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 4.

“It’s beautiful. I enjoyed the stories and the music, the dancing—it’s wonderful,” he said. Mr. Glaser was most impressed by “the athleticism of the dancers.”

“It’s wonderful to see the leaps and the synchronicity of their movements; it’s impressive. I’ve seen a lot of Broadway shows. This is truly unique.”

According to its website, the name ‘Shen Yun” translates directly into “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Based in New York, the artists have made it their mission to revive, through dance and music, China’s 5000 years of divinely inspired civilization to its pre-communist glory.

While Mr. Glaser loved all the dances, he was especially moved by the story-based programs raising awareness about the ongoing human rights issues in present-day China.

“It’s heartrending,” he expressed. “So, it’s nice to see the culture as it existed before the Chinese Communist Party.”

Referring to the spiritual element of the performance and the artists’ portrayal of traditional values, Mr. Glaser said the message “came across very well.”

“It’s interesting because I don’t know how many people realize that’s how it was before the recent takeover of the communists. I enjoyed learning about that part of Chinese culture,” he added.

“Being a faithful Christian myself, I like spiritual things, and learning more about how that’s being expressed in the show was exhilarating.”

Shen Yun’s performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Mr. Glaser felt “it’s a shame” that Shen Yun is currently banned by the Chinese Communist Party from performing in China. However, he’s also hopeful that as more people hear and learn about Shen Yun, there will be a change someday.

Company director Gloria Alonso and her husband, Jose Brito, enjoyed the evening show.

“It’s very enlightening. The music was wonderful, beautiful—all the performances are so very nice,” Ms. Alonso expressed.

“I think [the backdrop] played an integral part of the show because it looked very real [with] how the dancers [seemingly] jump into the screen.”

Shen Yun’s patented 3D digital technology is so unique that it holds its own patent. By working in harmony with the performers on stage, it offers the audience a brand-new storytelling experience.

For Ms. Alonso, the performance was a time machine that took its audience “back into the past and through to the real-time. … It was like transporting through the history of China.”

Mr. Britol fully agrees with his wife and added that Shen Yun was “a great show.”

“I loved it,” he said. “Everything was beautiful, and [the message] was excellent. I thought it was very enlightening. Very good.”
