Shen Yun Performing Arts visited the Sydney Capitol Theatre in Australia from March 8 to 10, to showcase 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture, and it left theatergoers in awe of its artistry.
In the audience was Mark Latham, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. He shared his appreciation for the revival of classical Chinese dance.
“Well, it’s a fantastic performance. Colorful, skillful, the acrobats: the whole presentation has been wonderful. And it’s good to see the revival of classical Chinese dance, that it’s not lost forever, and it’s alive and well here at the Capitol Theatre,” he said.
“I’m amazed. I’ve never seen that before. I’m amazed with the music, the color, the magnificence of it,” said Dr. Jerry Schwartz, CEO of Schwartz Family Co.
Shen Yun’s music and dance performances draw inspiration from China’s rich cultural heritage, whose values are rooted in spirituality. Unfortunately because of this, Shen Yun is unable to perform in communist China due to its persecution of faith.
“It’s sad because, when something is of cultural importance, [it] should be shown around the world, especially where it originated from. So I would say it’s sad that it can’t be performed in China and it can’t be experienced by the Chinese,” said Richard Mutschall, an actor.
“I think learning about Falun Gong and what’s happening in China today, and I think, just to see that history really impressed me. I think the takeaway is really to see the beautiful culture of China, not what we see on the news today and the main media. To see the real culture of China,” said Peter Hale, the owner and founder of Strathearn Park Lodge.
“The fact that it’s here in Sydney, but it’s not in Shanghai, it’s not in Beijing. You know, it’s not in any part of China. That’s a sad reflection on a regime that lost part of the wonderful classical culture of their own people. … The oppression of Chinese communism hasn’t killed forever classical Chinese dance. And it’s an honor, it’s a privilege, to be here in Sydney enjoying it,” said Mr. Latham.
Shen Yun showcases an all-new program each year, featuring new music and dance performances, stories, and 3D animated backdrops.
“More than highly recommend this company. I’ve always been talking about it at the studio, and the beautiful work and the training that’s going into this. It’s just a credit. And the choreographers are amazing,” said Berenice Wakeman Mead, a registered Royal Academy of Dance Teacher at Newcastle Premier Dance Co.
“Amazing experience. It’s a combination of mystical, magical, and just absolutely fantastic,” said Dr. Peter Kim, the former deputy mayor of the City of Ryde.
Shen Yun will stay in Sydney for now, gracing the stage there with another 7 shows through March 17.
