DALLAS—A medical doctor described his experience at a Shen Yun Performing Arts performance at the Eisemann Center on Jan. 4 as one of harmony.

“Overall, it’s great. I think overall harmony, a lot of harmony,” Dr. Ali Pitafi, who specializes in internal medicine and teaches at a university, said.

“I think they have worked very hard. They are in synchrony. They are very well coordinated. It’s a lot of commitment and focus. Like I said, It’s a lot of harmony that I could see,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun, which has grown from one to eight touring groups since its inception in 2006, showcases classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dance, and story-based dance. The on-stage performance is accompanied by a unique live orchestra, which combines Western symphonic instruments with traditional Chinese instruments.

Aside from its aesthetic appeal, Shen Yun is known for bringing to the audience the spiritual essence of ancient China’s 5,000 years of civilization. According to its website, concepts like harmony among Heaven, Earth, and humankind and values such as tolerance and compassion are integral parts of Shen Yun’s performances.

Dr. Pitafi said the music was very good, and he enjoyed particularly the soprano’s performance.

“It took me somewhere else,” he said. “That’s good. It’s touched my soul.”

“She was trying to connect with the true divine spark in the soul,” he added. “It made me connect to my very deep inside divine spark.”

Shen Yun vocalists are reviving an ancient singing technique called bel canto, saying that its true form was used in ancient Chinese theater and early European opera. “The true bel canto technique for singing in the upper register, however, has since been lost in both the East and the West,” Shen Yun said on its website.

The true bel canto technique allows singers to “produce the most beautiful and pure tone of voice, Shen Yun said.
