Shen Yun Performing Arts performed in three countries simultaneously on Jan. 7 and made a historic debut in a former Soviet Union country. Audience members in Latvia, the United States, and Italy got a glimpse of China’s 5,000 years of traditional culture and marveled at the artistry.
“The dancers are fantastic, graceful. The performance is synced with the video. I’ve never seen anything like it before. It’s fantastic,” said Silvija Birģele, a lawyer.
“It’s phenomenal, unbelievable. Beautiful, flawless, excellent music. There’s no mistakes, these dancers are first class,” said Steve Wald, a business owner.
“They amazed me because they were all together, they had the same rhythm, and it was a very nice choreography,” said Lorella Zoia, a public official.
“It was very nice and during our winter, especially now when it’s dark, it was like a fresh breath, like a fresh ray of sunshine. I liked it very much,” said Anita Nikulceba, a graphic designer.
Traditional Chinese culture and values find their roots in the divine, which Shen Yun showcases through classical dance and music. Theatergoers took note of a deeper message and praised Shen Yun’s efforts to share it with the world.
“Everybody needs compassion in today’s world when we have so much aggression and war going on so close to us. So there is never too much compassion and it’s beautiful that someone talks about that,” said Ieva Rubene, an artist.
“It is amazing to see over 5,000 years of culture be displayed. It is saddening to understand that less than 100 years of communism, of suppression of these expressions and beliefs, is destroying this culture,” said Beau McCrory, a physician.
“An impression of grace and serenity is the very thing we need most during this time in history, I would say,” said Stefano Cane, a business owner.
“It’s worth it, to see both the old traditions and the new techniques you use to show [Chinese culture] and make it all so interactive and enjoyable,” said Elīna Janova, a lawyer.
“I think there’s a lot of sincerity and goodness that comes from the performance,” said Elita Vareva, a doctor. “Thank you very much for coming to Latvia, to our small country. Thank you very much.”
Shen Yun will be performing at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida, from Jan. 10 through 12.
