The Senate voted to continue on with Trump’s impeachment trial. 56 voted it was constitutional to hold the trial, while 44 voted it was not since Trump is now a private citizen. House impeachment manager Jamie Raskin argued that the trial must be held to prevent future presidents from thinking they’ll be immune to consequences if they commit a crime right before they leave office.
Trump defense attorney Bruce Castor called Raskin’s argument ridiculous, calling it an affront to the American people for Senators to take it upon themselves to decide who the American people can or cannot elect to office.
