Queen Elizabeth II has officially launched the countdown to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

On March 13th she handed the relay baton to champion Olympic cyclist Anna Meares. The baton will now make its 388-day trip to the host country, Australia. It will travel 200,000 miles through 71 countries.

The Commonwealth is an association of countries that were mostly former territories of the British empire. The Commonwealth Games is a competition similar to the Olympics, just for Commonwealth nations. It is held every four years.
