Paris Olympics Day 8: US Shatters World Record in Mixed Medley Relay; Ledecky, Biles Win More Gold

On day 8 of the Paris Olympic Games, the U.S. swim team dominated the 4x100m relay, setting a new world record and bringing home the gold.

Katie Ledecky continued her reign in the 800-meter freestyle, making Olympic history by winning her fourth consecutive gold medal in the event and becoming the most decorated female Olympic swimmer.

Simone Biles added another gold medal to her collection, taking gold in vault.

USA Shatters World Record in Mixed Medley Relay, Wins Gold

The United States swam to victory in the mixed 4x100m relay, not only winning gold but also setting a new world record.

The team consisting of Ryan Murphy, Nic Fink, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske delivered a flawless performance to secure the title.

The race was a closely contested battle, with China going toe-to-toe with the Americans. Ultimately, the USA proved too strong as they touched the wall with a world record time of 3:37.43.

China secured a silver medal with an Asian record, while Australia took home the bronze with an Oceanic record.

Jasmine Moore Claims Bronze in Triple Jump

Jasmine Moore, representing the United States from Grand Prairie, Texas, won the bronze medal in the women’s triple jump at the Stade de France, despite wet conditions.

Dominica’s Thea LaFond took gold, while Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts took silver.

Katie Ledecky Wins 9th Olympic Gold Medal

Katie Ledecky wins gold in the 800-meter freestyle. This is her fourth gold medal in a row for this event.

It also marks her ninth gold medal and 14th overall medal. She is now the most decorated female Olympic swimmer ever.

Alfred Makes History With Gold

Julien Alfred has won the women’s 100-meter final. The Saint Lucian athlete crossed the finish line 0.15 seconds ahead of the competition to secure her country’s first ever Olympic gold medal.

Sha’Carrie Richardson of the United States won the silver, while fellow American Melissa Jefferson won bronze.

USA Wins Silver in Mixed 4×400 Relay

Team USA narrowly missed out on gold, securing a silver medal after a heart-stopping finish.

The quartet of Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon, and Kaylyn Brown gave a stellar performance, commanding a lead for much of the final lap. However, Netherlands ultimately edged them out for the top spot.

The bronze went to Great Britain.

Ryan Crouser Makes History With Shot Put Three-Peat

American shot-putter Ryan Crouser secured his third consecutive gold medal in the final round.

With stiff competition from fellow Americans Joe Kovacs and Payton Otterdahl as well as Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell, the event was a nail-biter. Kovacs managed to snatch second place from Otterdahl with a strong final throw.

Jamaica’s Campbell had one last chance to challenge for gold, but his final attempt was a foul, handing the victory to Crouser.

Crouser celebrated his historic achievement, becoming the first athlete ever to win three Olympic shot put gold medals.

The final podium featured Crouser in gold, Kovacs in silver, and Campbell in bronze.

Stephen Nedoroscik Wins Bronze on Pommel Horse

USA Men’s gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik won a bronze medal on the pommel horse Saturday. He will be the only male gymnast from the United States to win an individual medal in the 2024 Paris games.

The pommel horse is Nedoroscik’s specialty, and his routine for the bronze was even more intricate than the one he used during the qualifying.

He seemed pleased with the showing, giving a thumbs up to the camera when he finished.

He earned a 15.3 behind Nariman Kurbanov of Kazakhstan and Rhys McClenaghan of Ireland.

Two-time defending Olympic champion in this event, Max Whitlock, finished fourth.

Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Clinches Medal Amid Gender Controversy

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif defeated Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori 5–0 in a women’s welterweight quarter-final fight on Saturday to ensure Algeria’s first Olympic boxing medal since 2000.

Khelif, a silver medallist at the 2022 worlds, and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting have been in the spotlight in recent days as part of a gender row that has dominated headlines and been the subject of much discussion on social media platforms.

Both boxers were disqualified at the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi after failing the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) eligibility rules preventing athletes with male XY chromosomes from competing in women’s events.

Vincent Hancock Wins Historic Skeet Gold

Team USA’s Vincent Hancock wins the gold medal in skeet shooting in a close competition with his own student, Connor Prince, who takes the silver in the event.

It is Hancock’s fourth Olympic gold in the same event, which only five other Olympians have accomplished. He also won gold for skeet shooting in Beijing, London, and Tokyo. Katie Ledecky also has a chance to join this elite group if she wins gold in the women’s 800m freestyle tonight.

Australia Takes Gold, USA Silver in Men’s Doubles Tennis

Team USA wins a silver medal on Saturday in Men’s Tennis Doubles in a closely fought match with Australia, which will take home the gold.

Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram took the first set and broke the Australian pair’s serve in the second set. From there, Australians Matthew Ebden and John Peers broke back and maintained the momentum through three tiebreaks, finally winning 10–8 on the fourth match point.

The United States is also playing a bronze medal match against the Czech Republic, which is underway now. Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul hope to win another medal for the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Team USA Win Men’s Eight Bronze

The Team USA boat won the Olympic bronze medal in the men’s eights at the Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on Saturday, marking the United States’s first podium finish of the day.

Team Great Britain took gold, while the Netherlands secured the silver medal.
