Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, was first introduced in China on May 13, 1992. The spiritual practice involves meditative exercises and moral teachings based on the tenets of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. Due to its many health benefits, the practice exploded in popularity through word of mouth in a short period of time. By 1999, there were between 70 million and 100 million adherents in China alone, according to official estimates.
