Hurricane Helene slammed into northwestern Florida on Thursday evening as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. More than 2.2 million homes and businesses were without power in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Helene weakened to a Category 1 hurricane as it moved across Georgia overnight.
New York Mayor Eric Adams will make his initial court appearance today in lower Manhattan. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams announced a five-count indictment against Adams, who says he’s innocent. Williams is accusing Adams of involvement in a multiyear scheme to commit fraud in exchange for money and property.
The Israeli army says it intercepted another missile fired from Yemen on Friday. Sirens and explosions were heard in central Israel early Friday morning. The Israel Defense Forces says a surface-to-surface missile was used in the attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak at the U.N. General Assembly on Friday. When asked about a U.S.-led cease-fire plan on Thursday, Netanyahu said Israel will keep hitting Hezbollah with full force.
