Some soccer cleats are made with kangaroo leather. It’s lighter and more durable than other leather, but its use is declining over concern for the Australian marsupial’s welfare. Nike announced earlier this year that it would stop using the material in its shoes, in the face of a now-shelved bill to ban it in Oregon, where Nike is based, and similar efforts across the nation. But some Australian scientists say such a move ultimately harms the animal.
