The mother of the man who shot co-workers at a Kentucky bank on April 10 called 911, newly released audio shows.

Lisa Sturgeon reached a dispatcher on Monday morning, after her son Connor, 25, opened fire with a rifle at Old National Bank in Louisville.

“My son … apparently has a gun and he’s heading toward the Old National,” Lisa Sturgeon said. “This is his mother.”

Lisa Sturgeon said she was getting details secondhand from her son’s roommate, who had conveyed that her son had left a note.

“We don’t even own guns,” she said. “I don’t know where he would have gotten a gun.”

By the time the call was made, officers had already responded to the bank. Other calls had alerted law enforcement to the shooting.

Connor Sturgeon purchased the weapon he used legally on April 4, according to officials.

“I don’t know what to do. I need your help. I think he’s never hurt anyone; he’s a really good kid,” Lisa Sturgeon said. She also described her son as “non-violent” and said she was “shaking.”

When she asked whether she should go to the bank, the dispatcher said no.

“I don’t want you to go to the location, we have a situation that’s going on down there right now,” the dispatcher said. “We’ve already had calls from other people and I do not need you to go to the location at this time. It’s dangerous there.”

Connor Sturgeon was shot dead by responding officers after opening fire during a morning meeting. Five people in addition to the attacker died, while three people, including Officer Nick Wilt, remain in the hospital.

Police have said the shooting was targeted, noting that Connor Sturgeon was employed by the bank. Details from the note he left behind have not been made public. Connor Sturgeon conveyed to at least one person that he was suicidal, according to Rep. Morgan McGarvey (D-Ky.). The Sturgeon family has said Connor Sturgeon was dealing with mental issues.

The redacted 911 audio was released by the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Other Calls

Multiple witnesses called 911, describing how a shooting had occurred.

“A shooter came in, first floor, shotgun,” one man, who fled to a nearby dentist office, told a dispatcher.

The man said that the shooter fired approximately 15 rounds, and that there were about 14 people in the room.

“Please get people there fast, please. And ambulances, please,” the man said.

“We have an active shooter in our building,” another man told 911. “Get here now!”

A woman hiding in a closet said that she knew the shooter because the man worked for the bank. “He’s a young male,” she said.

Another witness described seeing the shooting unfold as she attended the meeting remotely.

“We heard multiple shots and everybody started saying ‘Oh my God,’ and then he came into the board room,” the witness said.

The shooter “was in and out of that room very quickly.”

Witnesses described a white man with dark hair wearing khakis. He was estimated to be about 6 feet tall. His mom put him at 6’4″.

Another person called, saying she’d been in her car and spotted a man with a gun.

“I was driving down the street and I don’t know if I was seeing things but I saw a man with a some type of like assault rifle walking around,” the woman said. “He was like, kind of like jogging around like he was like, trying to get somewhere in a hurry.”

Officers later made contact with Connor Sturgeon’s father and roommate and “cleared” the man’s house, according to a dispatcher. Police officials have said they executed a search warrant on Monday and recovered multiple items.
