Millions of flowers bloom at Abbotsford Tulip Festival

Fields of tulips are blooming just 45 miles (72 kilometers) from Vancouver, Canada. It’s the BLOOM, Abbotsford Tulip Festival.

Three million tulips are spread across 14 acres. Tourists and local residents come for a colorful day of sightseeing, picnicking, and kite flying.

This year’s festival opened on April 10.

“It’s awesome, it’s not actually what I expected, I thought it would be a lot smaller than this,” said Vancouver resident Cindy Mulligan, who found the festival on Instagram. “We’re just going to wander around, soak in the sun, look at the pretty colors and wait for spring.”

“Yeah, I think we’ll take a few home, why not? They’re so beautiful you can’t not,” said Vanessa Monteith, who is visiting from Toronto.

“It as beautiful, it was more than we had expected,” said Maggie Lister, a local resident. “The sun is out, it was a beautiful, beautiful way to spend an almost spring-like morning.”

Ninety-thousand people came to the four-week festival last year.

“This is our second year running now, and it’s been much more popular even than it was last year. So we’re really excited,” said Danielle Campbell, a festival staff member.

If you’re in Vancouver, come to Abbotsford to see the tulips before the festival ends on May 14.
