The man repeatedly strikes matches in an attempt to ignite whatever he has put in the soil in order to kill an infestation of cockroaches. When it finally ignites, it explodes, uprooting most of his lawn. Fortunately the Beagles weren’t injured! I don’t think this turned out how he expected.
