A man who claims to be the son of Star Trek actor William Shatner now wants Shatner’s name.
William Shatner, 87, known for his role as Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek television series and movies, denies that 62-year-old Peter Sloan is his son, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Sloan said his mother told him that she and Shatner had a one-night-stand in 1956. Sloan was born later that year and given up for adoption, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Now Sloan wants to change his last name to Shatner, which he calls his “birth right.” Sloan’s mother, late actress Kathy Burt, and Shatner reportedly worked in Canadian television together.

Sloan petitioned Pinellas County, Florida, court to change his last name to Shatner on Jan. 14, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Shatner’s lawyer then sent him a cease and desist order. Sloan was unsure how Shatner learned of his attempt to take the name, but he said it might have been through social media.
In 2016 the New York Post reported that Sloan sued Shatner for $170 million for disavowing he was his father.
“Mr. Shatner has three lovely daughters, but no sons … Mr. Shatner is aware of the lawsuit, but there’s nothing there because he isn’t his father,” said a rep for Shatner, via the Post.

Sloan was using the Shatner last name even before he attempted to change his name officially. He has a website, petershatner.com, and a book on Amazon under the name Peter Shatner. He also used the name in his work as a radio host.
“Bill … confirmed to me once again that he is not your father. There have been many people over the years who have claimed to be his children or other relatives,” Shatner’s lawyer Erik Hyman wrote to Sloan, in writing obtained by the Post. “He is an incredibly busy, 80-year-old man, and is not interested in spending time discussing this issue with you.”

Sloan’s mother also mentioned another man who could be Sloan’s father, when he and his mother reconnected in 1984, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The other man was a law student from Montreal. Attorney John B. Atkinson said Sloan stated that the adoption agency described his father as a “law student.”

Atkinson also mentioned that Sloan’s earlier lawsuit against Shatner was dismissed on grounds that Shatner’s parentage of Sloan “has never been established.”
“These falsities and failures clearly indicate that the Petition has an ulterior motive or illegal purpose that may invade the property rights of Mr. Shatner and others,” Atkinson wrote, via the Tampa Bay Times, hinting that Sloan could be trying to get ahold of the Star Trek actor’s fortunes.

Sloan also uses Shatner as his last name on his Facebook page. He has a photo of himself and Shatner on his webpage at an unknown location. Another photo includes Sloan’s daughter and Sloan, on opposite sides of a seated Shatner, at a fan event.
Sloan also has an old photo of his mother and Shatner acting on a TV show together on the page. The site says Sloan is a filmmaker, actor, writer, producer, and the CEO of an insurance company.
