Recent activity near Reykjavik signifies the sixth volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula since December 2023. The volcanic system does not exhibit a central crater but erupts by opening large cracks in the ground. The eruption does not currently threaten local infrastructure, says volcanologist Rikke Pedersen.
Thursday’s eruption came at the Sundhnukar crater row east of Sylingarfell mountain.
Studies had shown magma accumulating underground, prompting warnings of fresh volcanic activity in the area located just south of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik.
