Dairy company HP Hood voluntarily recalled Lactaid, a brand of lactose-free dairy milk, in 27 states after discovering possible traces of almonds, according to the company and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
HP Hood announced on Sept. 19 that the lactose-free milk may contain traces of almonds, which were not listed on the label. Consuming the product can potentially put people who have allergies or severe sensitivity to almonds at risk.
The recall applies to 96 oz plastic packaged containers of whole milk, 1 percent, 2 percent, fat-free, and 2 percent calcium-enriched Lactaid Milk with the code 51-4109 P2 and specific “best by dates” listed on the announcement.
The listed products were shipped to retailers and wholesalers from Sept. 5 to Sept. 18 to the following states: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The company discovered the problem after routine maintenance programs showed the potential for trace amounts of almond, HP Hood stated.
According to the announcement, no illnesses have been reported to date.
Customers who purchased the product affected by the recall may return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund or exchange or call Hood Consumer Affairs at 800-242-2423 Monday through Friday from 9 AM ET to 5:00 PM ET.
