The budget battle to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year is not over. Democrats and Republicans are divided and not everyone in the GOP is supporting President-elect Donald Trump’s policy priorities.
House Democrats are weary of the 119th Congress and any future budget negotiations with Republicans after Speaker of the House Mike Johnson reneged on the bipartisan bill he drafted with Democrats.
Meanwhile, House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (R-Md.) said last week he is undecided on whether to support the reelection of Johnson, and Rep. Tom Massie (R-Ky.) has already said he will not do so. Others in the Republican conference are calling for unity.
