Since the recent multistate listeria outbreak caused by a range of Boar’s Head deli meats, the company has recalled a range of other products after its first recall of liverwurst products in late July.
So far, the contaminated deli meat has led to the death of nine people, with dozens more hospitalized, according to the latest CDC announcement on Aug. 28.
The affected meat products were all produced in the company’s Jarratt, Virginia, facility. Four days after the initial outbreak, on July 29, the company announced that it was recalling every item produced at the facility, totaling over 7 million pounds of meat.
The recall affected multiple varieties of ham, bacon, bologna, frankfurters, sausage, pate, and head cheese sold under Boar’s Head and Old Country brands.
A complete list of recalled products can be found on the company’s website. All recalled products are limited to those purchased before July 31, according to the company.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture additionally published images of the labels associated with the products.
According to a CDC alert, consumers should look for products they might have purchased bearing labels reading “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Some of the products have sell-by dates into October, the CDC notes.
The contaminated deli meats only affect a small number of pre-packaged items, such as sausage, frankfurter, and bacon products; the majority of affected meats are sliced fresh to order at deli counters, according to the company.
All affected products have since been removed from sale, the company confirmed, with all products currently sold in food retail and food service not part of the recall.
None of Boar’s Head’s turkey varieties were among those recalled, the company said, and neither were its deli-counter-sliced turkey, chicken, roast beef, or any of the brand’s cheeses part of the recall.
The company has since assured customers that food safety and customer health and well-being are paramount.
Customers who bought the contaminated products have been advised to either throw them out or return them to the store for a full refund. Consumers were also advised to clean out their refrigerators as the bacteria can grow in cold temperatures and spread to other foods.
Listeria monocytogenes is especially dangerous for pregnant women and people aged 65 or over, or for those with a weakened immune system, according to the CDC.
While refrigeration does not kill listeria, heating the products to over 165 degrees F, or until steaming hot, will easily destroy the bacteria.
While symptoms of listeria are often mild, especially in younger people, they can include fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, headaches, confusion, and diarrhea.
