Colorado is seeing a boost in girl scout cookies, thanks to a girl scout in Colorado who worked together with her mother to sell boxes and boxes of cookies by reinventing the packaging.
Charlotte Holmberg, a Girl Scouts “Top Cookie CEO,” worked together with her mother to redesign the packaging of one of the Girl Scout cookies—the samoa—by printing and affixing a picture of the “Aquaman” actor Jason Momoa on the box, and then renaming the newly-designed cookies “Momoas” after the actor, according to FoxNews.
With a new look on the Girl Scout cookies, she posted the newly-designed packaging on Facebook in order to promote it, and the results were very positive. The cookie boxes’ fresh look captivated many people, as well as helped Holmberg sell a lot of Samoa cookies, according to KUSA.
Thank you Kim Christiansen and Kristen Aguirre of 9NEWS (KUSA) for supporting Girl Scout Charlotte and purchasing a package of Jason Momoa Samoas!
“The moms are getting really excited and they’re saying that they need them,” Holmberg said.
The fifth-grade Girl Scout said that the “Momoas” cookies were so popular that the other Girl Scouts also contacted her to buy the cookies.
“The girls will want to buy some because he’s on the front, and the boys will also want to buy some because he might be their favorite character,” she told 9News.
Jason Momoa, also known as Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa, plays the titular character in the “Aquaman” film as Aquaman himself.
In the film, the half-human, half-Atlantean prince is heir to the throne of Atlantis and protects his people against his half-brother Orm, who plans to conquer the world—both the ocean world as well as the human world.
The Inspiration
This Girl Scout cookie idea came after Holmberg’s mother, who works as a marketer, stumbled across a “meme” on Twitter, where a picture of Momoa was placed beside a picture of a Samoa with the words: Forget elf on a shelf, try Momoa on a Samoa.
Holmberg’s mother was consequently inspired by the picture and worked together with her daughter to create new cover art for the cookies’ packaging, transforming the standard purple box with a new, captivating look.
My Momoa on a Samoa meme has a combined 30,000+ shares so far in just the places I’ve seen it. Now that I’ve achieved internet greatness, what comes next? Chinese food.

The person who claimed to have created the original twitter viral image of Momoa on Facebook, Matt Hayduke, said he fully supported Holmberg and is glad that his viral image helped with cookie sales. In addition, he also wrote on the Girl Scouts Colorado’s Facebook page and said that his daughter is also a Girl Scout.
“As the originator of the meme, I’m glad to see the idea inspiring others to help Girl Scouts! (my daughter is a Girl Scout, too),” Hayduke wrote.
According to KUSA, even before the promotional tactic with the “Momoas,” Holmberg had been a top seller of cookies. Last year, according to 9News, Holmbert sold as many as 2,000 boxes of Girl Scouts cookies.
Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts cookies have been around over 100 years and were started to empower girls back in the 1910s. The sales process helps girls build teamwork, opportunities, and skills, as well as provide fundraising for the organization, according to the Girl Scouts website.
There are a wide variety of different cookies that are being sold: 12 in total, all of which are listed on their website.
Each different cookie teaches the Girl Scout something different—for example, through selling the Samoas cookies, the interaction with customers teaches the girls about business ethics. For the peanut butter patties, through selling these specific cookies, the girls learn about decision-making.
The Girl Scout program seeks to encourage girls to tackle activities that interest them and get first-hand and hands-on experience with other girls in their community.
