China in Focus (July 14): Yangtze River Rises 16 Feet Above Ground Level

The water level of China’s famous Yangtze river has risen so much that it’s now 16 feet higher than Wuhan city’s ground level. It’s the highest recorded peak in the last 20 years.

Flooding continues to ravage southern China, while many are forced to flee their homes. But one state media host says the disaster is just an illusion.

The Trump administration may soon end an agreement with Chinese auditing authorities. The move may indicate a broader crackdown on U.S.-listed Chinese firms that don’t abide by U.S. standards.

China says it will impose unspecified sanctions on three U.S. lawmakers and one ambassador. But experts say the impact will likely be minimal.

And, China and Iran are reportedly close to signing a major economic and military deal—though it may create more friction between the United States and China. An expert says the two regimes are working together against the United States, and that the move could be aimed at the upcoming November election.
