Right on LA! with Ruby Lovell features a tribute to a remarkable Latina Gloria Molina.
Gloria Molina Day, officially announced by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, shines a spotlight on the trailblazing Chicana who broke boundaries to become the first Latina to be elected to three political offices in California.
The celebrations and tribute to her life are marked with an art exhibition of photos and a superb collection of vibrant and colorful paintings by local Latino artists capturing her spirit and strength, as well as the unveiling of a magnificent mural by renowned Chicana muralist Margaret Garcia that honors Molina’s incredible life journey.
The world premiere of the theater play “A Woman Named Gloria,” written by award-winning playwright and screenwriter Josefina Lopez and directed by Cory Dominguez, complimented the exhibition and celebrations of the day. It brought Molina’s life story to the stage: showcasing and highlighting her journey, from humble beginnings to her rise as a powerful figure who changed Los Angeles and paved the way for other women and Latinos to rise up and make a difference. The impactful play featured powerful dialogue and emotional scenes, and explored the personal struggles, relationships, and defining moments. Lead actress Karla Ojeda, who embodies the resilience and compassion of Molina, gave a riveting portrayal that captivated the audience.
The celebrations and dedications of the day were full of tributes in all art forms.
