Carter Motorcade Travels From Americus Through His Hometown of Plains to Atlanta

A motorcade carrying former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s remains travels on Jan. 4 from the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center through his hometown of Plains and then to the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he will lie in repose for mourners to pay their respects until Jan. 7.

Before arriving at the Carter Presidential Center, the motorcade will make a stop at the State Capitol, where Gov. Brian Kemp and local officials will observe a moment of silence to honor the former president.

SCHEDULE:
9:00 a.m. ET—Views of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and Plains
10:15 a.m. ET—Carter family arrives at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center to escort body
TBA—Former agents of President Carter’s Secret Service detail carry casket to a hearse
TBA—Hearse passes through Plains, Georgia, President Carter’s hometown
10:55 a.m. ET—Hearse begins journey to Atlanta
1:00 p.m. ET—View of Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta
3:00 p.m. ET—Hearse stops at the State Capitol and is greeted by Gov. Brian Kemp
3:45 p.m. ET—Casket is removed from the hearse and carried into the Carter Presidential Center
4:00 p.m. ET—A brief memorial service is held inside the Carter Center
6:59 p.m. ET—Members of the public may begin paying their respects
