As a seven-year veteran of the Burning Man Festival held annually at Black Rock City—a temporary community created in the middle of the Black Rock Desert in northwestern Nevada—David Date described the problems ensuing from a storm that left thousands of revelers stranded as “a disaster like never been seen.” Following downpours that turned the Nevada desert into a sea of sticky mud and that stranded thousands, Mr. Date said on Sunday that festival-goers had been sharing provisions and taking care of each other, with some even continuing to party. An estimated 70,000 people had attended the nine-day event and one person had died, authorities said on Sunday. An investigation is underway.
