Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged foreign leaders to oppose Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s effort “to strengthen his own grip on power,” during a Thursday meeting with foreign ministers in New York.
The U.S. government has imposed sanctions against the Maduro regime and several allies in response to Venezuela’s disputed July presidential election. The United States has accused the Maduro regime of obstructing the July 28 vote, and of carrying out human rights abuses.
“The United States and its partners stand fully ready to support this process. Our ability to stay united in this effort is crucial,” Blinken said.
