A man was arrested on Friday after he allegedly stabbed at least six family members inside their home in Kensington, Philadelphia, as they were sleeping, police said.
The suspect was reportedly located by police a few blocks away from the home shortly after the stabbing incident, WPVI-TV reported. The 29-year-old man was found “covered with blood” and had minor wounds to his hands.
“This person was also covered with blood. His face, his clothing, and he actually had some cuts to the inside of hands, which is common when you stab somebody,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told the network.
“It’s a very violent scene,” he added.
The six victims range in age from 26 to 46 and the eldest victim, a 46-year-old woman, is reportedly in critical condition with stab wounds to her head and neck.
The conditions of the other five victims were described by police as “mostly stable,” FOX29 reported. At the time of the stabbing incident, several young children were also present in the home, but they were not injured.
According to a preliminary investigation, Small said the suspect apparently went from bedroom to bedroom—three in total—on the second floor of the house to stab the family. He used two different knives that were described as kitchen knives.
“One of the knives, that’s all metal, is actually broken, which goes to show how violently these individuals were being stabbed,” Small told WPVI-TV.
Investigators haven’t determined a motive yet for the violent attack as of Friday, police said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
